The total eclipse of the sun this past week caused some to consider the work of our God’s hands. "It's one of those experiences that makes you feel like you're part of the larger universe," said NASA astronomer Janet Luhman. "I believe it's a wonderful work of God, despite all what the scientists say," said Solomon Pomenya, a 52-year old doctor. "This tells me that God is a true engineer.” King David said in Ps 19:1-6 “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun , Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.” Job spoke of the LORD when he said in Job 9:7-10 “Which commanded the sun , and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars. Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.” The LORD said in Jeremiah 31:35-36 of His people Israel… “Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.” The LORD Jesus spoke of the sun in Matthew 5:45 when He said “That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” The OT prophets tell us that in the coming “Day of the LORD” the sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood (Joel 2:10,31, 3:15, Amos 8:9) and Isaiah tells us in Isaiah 60:19-20 that throughout eternity “The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.” How great is our God? Well, not only did He create the sun instantaneously, not only does He hold it in its proper orbit, He can change it like the pin on our watches, in fact He did, Isaiah 38:7-8 “And this shall be a sign unto thee from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that he hath spoken; Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.” He can also stop it in the middle of the day! Joshua 10:12-14 “Then spoke Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun , stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.” People get excited about a solar eclipse, wait till you see what the LORD is going to do…He is going to make “new heavens and a new earth, wherein righteousness dwells (2 Peter 3:12-14) and His children, “the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father (Matthew 13:43). No matter how bright the sun may shine it cannot hold a candle to our God, Savior, and coming KING, the LORD Jesus, Matthew 17:1-2 “ And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun , and his raiment was white as the light.” “Even so, come Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22)
